BACKGROUND

Siel De Bruyn is a PhD Researcher in Agogische Wetenschappen (Adult Educational Sciences) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Within SARLab, she works on the PLACE project: Participatory Life-course Approaches to Civic Engagement in Later Life. Her work focuses on the civic engagement of older adults in disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods. She studies the interaction between life course events and neighbourhood characteristics through a feminist lens.

In 2024, Siel obtained her Master’s degree in Sociology at Ghent University. Her master’s thesis focused on patriarchal gender norms in men’s emotion regulation. The interest she developed here in wellbeing, gender dynamics, and qualitative research methods now continues in her doctoral project.
