Marie De Troyer

(she/her)

BACKGROUND

Marie joined the NELO project in 2026. Using quantitative methods, she examines how the social and physical neighbourhood influences social, emotional and existential loneliness among older adults after the loss of a loved one.

She studied Nutrition and Dietetics (2024) at HOGENT, where she soon realised that she was mainly interested in how the environment influences people’s behaviour and well-being, rather than in the individual as such. She therefore went on to study Health Promotion (2026) at Ghent University, where she was able to deepen her interest in environmental factors. She is also interested in gaining a better understanding of health-related phenomena, in identifying the groups most in need of support, and in how that support can best be provided. With her PhD, she hopes to contribute to a better understanding of the role of the neighbourhood in the story of loneliness after bereavement.
